Solving Open Internet Peer-To-Peer Content Distribution Using Ce Home Devices (12. September, 2008)

This paper describes user requirements for an advanced peer-to-peer (P2P) system used as an efficient and reliable system for media delivery across open Internet. The first part considers P2P from the network overlay point of view. The second part provides some requirements on the consumer electronic standardisation aspects. The EBU P2P portal trial, an incarnation of the concepts developed above, is currently underway and provides 24/7 live streaming of video and audio at quite viewable quality. The paper concludes with some pertinent open issues that need to be resolved in order to achieve open internet P2P distribution standards, agreed content formats and affordable consumer electronics end-user devices.
